Digital photo requirements
The US State Department sets the rules for digital visa and DV lottery photos. The tool above meets the technical ones: a square JPEG at 600 × 600 pixels, under 240 KB. Read the official digital image requirements (opens in new tab) for the full rules on pose, lighting and background.
How to make your photo
- Take a photo facing the camera, against a plain white or off-white wall.
- Add it above, then zoom and move it so your head is centred.
- Check the ticks and save the file.
The consulate or embassy makes the final decision on whether a photo is acceptable.
