How to check and fix your DV photo

    1. Have a photo already? Add it to the checker at the top. It tells you if the file is the right type, shape, size and colour.
    2. If something fails, press “Fix it”. The same photo moves into the tool, nothing uploaded.
    3. Zoom and move the photo so your face is centred, then check the ticks and save.
    4. Do the same for your spouse and each child if the instructions ask for them.

    Before you enter

    • Use the official site only: dvprogram.state.gov.
    • Have every photo ready before you start the form, so you don’t run out of time on the entry.
    • Keep your confirmation number safe. You need it to check your result.

    When can I enter?

A US court has ordered the State Department to open DV-2027 entries by 1 November 2026, for 30 days (Fragomen summary (opens in new tab)). Dates can still change, so always check dvprogram.state.gov and travel.state.gov for the official dates.

    Questions

What size must a DV lottery photo be?

The DV entry uses the same digital photo rules as US visas. A square colour JPEG from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, up to 240 KB. Check this year's instructions on dvprogram.state.gov before you enter.

Do I need photos of my spouse and children?

In past years the entry form has asked for a photo of you, your spouse and each eligible child, even if they won't move with you. Check this year's instructions for the exact rule.

Can I use last year's photo?

Take a new one. Past instructions have asked for a recent photo, and an old one is a common reason for problems later.

Does ReadyFile check my face and background?

No. We check the file itself, which is what the entry form checks when you upload. Pose, expression, glasses and background are checked by people later, so compare your photo with the official rules.

Is ReadyFile linked to the State Department?

No. ReadyFile is an independent tool. The only official place to enter is dvprogram.state.gov. Never pay an agent to "guarantee" an entry.

    Is my photo uploaded?

No. The check and the photo tool both run in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.
