Photograph your signature for an online form

A clean signature photo saves you from rejected applications. You only need white paper, a black pen and your phone.

Before: grey paper and a phone shadow.
After: pure white background, ready to resize.

What you need

  • Plain white paper, no lines
  • A black pen with a firm line (a ballpoint that skips makes broken strokes)
  • Daylight, or a bright room

Steps

  1. Sign in the middle of the paper, a little larger than usual.
  2. Place the paper on a flat surface near a window.
  3. Hold your phone directly above, parallel to the paper, so there is no angle.
  4. Make sure your phone’s shadow does not fall on the signature.
  5. Take the photo, then prepare it with the signature tool for your form. It crops, whitens the paper and saves a JPG at the exact size.

What the form checks

Every form sets its own size. For IBPS bank exams the signature must be 140 × 60 pixels and 10 to 20 KB, signed in black ink on white paper, and not in capital letters. The IBPS kit makes a file that meets all of that, and shows a pass or fail for each rule.

If your form isn’t listed yet, use the size in your notice with compress to exact KB, or tell us which form you need.

Common mistakes

  • Lined or coloured paper. The lines show up in the crop. Use plain white.
  • A photo at an angle. The signature looks squashed. Hold the phone flat above the paper.
  • Too much empty paper. Crop close, so the signature fills most of the image.
  • A different signature from the one on your exam day. Sign the way you always do.

Tip

Most portals compare your signature with the one you write at the exam. Sign the way you normally do, not a neater version.

Questions

Can I sign in capital letters?

Not for IBPS. Its rules say a signature in capital letters is not accepted. Use your normal running signature, and check your own notice for other forms.

Black or blue pen?

Black is the safe choice. IBPS asks for black ink. Some other forms accept dark blue, but a black pen passes both.

Is a phone photo allowed, or do I need a scanner?

Most portals only check the file, so a sharp, straight phone photo works. A few notices say "scanned signature". If yours does, use a scanner or a scanning app, then prepare the file the same way.

Why does my signature look grey or patchy?

Usually a shadow or poor light. Retake it near a window in daylight. The signature tool also whitens the paper and darkens the ink, but it can't add detail that isn't in the photo.
